How does Pilot Math work?
Pilot Math makes learning math fun and interactive. Built for classrooms with or without technology and Internet access, Pilot Math is easy to integrate into any setting and accommodates students with a variety of skill levels.
Resource Blended with Text and Multimedia
Pilot Math is a complete and rich multimedia, multimodal learning program designed to directly address classroom Math curriculum. Using texts, workbooks and computer access, students can learn, study and quiz themselves in a fun, interactive environment at school, at the library or at home. Pilot Math texts and workbooks direct students to use hundreds of online or USB/DVD provided media resources creating a current and exciting approach to learning math.
In the classroom students and teachers have print textbooks, workbooks and the teacher’s guide. At home, at the library or in the computer lab students can access the e-textbook, e-workbook, math animations, instructional activities, math-embedded games, concept capsules, notepad tutors and assessments online 24 hours a day. Teachers also have access to the online media and content that they can use at their option on SmartBoards or with a projector and screen.
Homework Friendly
Students are no longer stuck when they have left their text or workbook at school. With Pilot Math students can access an online version of their textbook and workbook 24 hours a day.
Will Pilot Math work with the media, or lack of it, in my classroom?
Pilot Math is a fully contained print resource with supplementary online resources that augment and enhance the classroom learning experience. Teachers can choose not to use the multimedia components and still cover the entire curriculum.
Below are some scenarios that help explain how you can easily integrate Pilot Math into your classroom:
Classroom – no media
For teachers who don’t have media access in the classroom:
- Use the traditional print text and workbook in the classroom
- Students can access media at home or in a computer lab or library
- Teachers can supply group time in class for students to share their media experiences such as online research or assessment results
Classroom – some media
For a classroom that only has a few computers or has an instruction station with a projector:
- Teachers can teach as above (see "no media" scenario) and/or project some Pilot Math learning media as appropriate
- Send students alone or in small groups to work with media (for examples, those struggling with fractions can access online "fractions" Concept Capsules, Notepad Tutor Interactive Games or Videos)
- Students finished with their work can play a math embedded game
- Students interested in the graphing calculator can do the concept capsule on graphing calculators and be provided with a graphing calculator to complete a project
- Students who learn better by viewing can custom search hundreds of math videos provided by Pilot Math
Classroom – media rich
For classrooms that have a computer for every one or two students or a Smart Board.
- Teachers can teach as above (see “some media” scenario)
- Plan teacher-designed lessons around the media (for example: game days, student groups presenting concept capsules on the Smart Board, student run review sessions, media rich lectures and classroom activities)
Why is Pilot Math in such high demand?
- Print textbooks and workbooks are customizable, affordable and can be printed on-demand.
- Aligned to your jurisdiction’s Math curriculum.
- Made by teachers with direct input from a cross section of student learners.
- Makes math fun and current for students by incorporating animations, games, videos, and other online activities into the learning process.
- Provides resources for students with a range of abilities.
- Uses Concept Capsules to challenge students that excel in math by pushing them beyond the required curriculum. These Capsules can also help less inclined students with remedial concepts such as fractions, decimals, and algebra.
- Directs students (and parents) to view Notepad Tutors before they complete worksheets so they have a fresh review of the concepts required.
- Hundreds of videos are available to Pilot Math learners so they can find their comfort level and viewing/video format and style.
- Games are available for practice of necessary skills.
- No more lost or forgotten homework. The textbook and workbook are available online in digital format for students to access from home.
- Your students will have many opportunities to personally assess themselves and master math subject matter through:
- Online games
- Quizzes
- Unit exams
- Online assessments
What is included with the resources?
Student Textbook
The Pilot™ Math series aligns with the common curriculum framework for the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol. The textbook organizes all of the print and multimedia elements of the program and provides a logical sequence of activities for students that allow them to investigate new concepts, test their understanding, and engage in challenging and fun learning activities. While the printed textbook references where the various program elements can be found, the online version has embedded hyperlinks to the multimedia elements within the text. This approach provides a simple transition for students between static text and multimedia resources and helps them to quickly connect to additional learning content on a specific topic.

Student Workbook
The workbook includes all of the exercises and explorations that are outlined in the textbook with space for the student to write the solutions below the questions. The workbook also contains mixed review questions at the end of each lesson. This review includes previously learned concepts (some of which are from earlier grade levels), as well as questions that prepare students for upcoming content.

Animations
At the start of each unit, there is an animation that provides an overview of the mathematical concepts that will be covered in the unit. They also provide real life context for the topics that will be covered in the course or learning unit. The characters in the animations are woven throughout the textbook, workbook, and math embedded games. The voice-overs for the animations are done by school-age students to help students relate to the lessons.

Concept Capsules
A Concept Capsule is an online lesson that breaks a complex math concept down into more detail. Providing the students with a variety of learning strategies, the Concept Capsule helps them to better understand and apply the concept to real life. Concept Capsules can be used in three ways:
- To review a concept from a previous grade’s curriculum and is needed for a lesson in the present curriculum;
- To reinforce a concept where more practice is required or a different teaching approach may be useful;
- To extend a concept beyond the present grade curriculum.

Notepad Tutor
Notepad Tutors are short videos that examine and explore math concepts. In the videos, a teacher walks the student through the concept, providing a visual representation of the lesson and including the written formulas on the screen. This allows the students to follow along. Like the Concept Capsules, Notepad Tutor lessons can also be used in three ways:
- To review a concept from a previous grade’s curriculum and is needed for a lesson in the present curriculum;
- To reinforce a concept where more practice is required or a different teaching approach may be useful;
- To extend a concept beyond the present grade curriculum.

Math Games
Students are directed to play math-related games at the end of each unit. The math embedded games are arcade-style games that utilize the characters from the animations. To reach higher levels in the game, the student must answer questions from the unit they have just finished. The term and definition activities help the students to understand and use the vocabulary of mathematics in a fun and interactive way. They include activities like: Drag and Drop, Word Searches , BINGO, and Hangman.

Quizzes and Tests
Quizzes and tests are used as components of a formative assessment strategy to gauge student understanding as they work through the lessons. A solutions booklet, containing answers for both the unit test and the lesson quizzes, is provided to the teacher as part of this resource.
